The TOWN and the CITY photographs of Lowell, Massachusetts by Jeff Caplan
“The TOWN and the CITY” has been an ongoing personal project for over 25 years now. As a native son of Lowell, Massachusetts I’ve watched my home town change over time, but more recently the landscape of the city is changing at
a rapid pace.
The mills in Lowell produced textile products through the 1800’s, but as the textile industry came to it’s demise in the 1940’s and 50’s it fell in to decay. My photographs try to capture the beauty and grit of a mill town built on the back of the Industrial Revolution striving to re-invent itself in a modern world. While also trying to keep one foot firmly planted in history.
This part of the project contains most recent work spanning over the past four years. Images taken throughout the city of Lowell depict deterioration, architecture, neighborhoods, bridges, vintage structures, and new construction.
Traditional black & white photographs and archival ink-jet prints are presented in a square format and displayed in
various sizes. Some as large as 46”x 46”.
A solo gallery showing of this photography took place in January of 2018 through February, 2018 at UnchARTed Gallery,
103 Market St. Lowell, MA 01852.
